BJD Facts

What is a BJD?

A BJD, or Ball Jointed Doll, is a doll that has been made for thousands of years.  In true fashion of many earlier dolls, like Bluette, these dolls are made to be played with. The current term BJD stems from a very famous doll company called Volks. Volks makes beautiful Japanese dolls and they started this now growing phenomenon, which is mostly Asian Companies. Goodreau Doll is the first American manufacturing company to produce an American designed version. The BJD’s have very distinctive features; they have removable and changeable eyes through a pate on their head or skull cap. They are bald so you can change wigs. They are easily dressed in very realistic or fantasy clothing and shoes. They come with factory face ups. Some come blank and you can paint them. A lot of people go in-between and enhance their dolls’ face ups. You can restring your dolls, modify their looks and also put different heads on doll bodies. They are fun in that you only need one doll, and that one doll can become many different characters.

Why are there resin and vinyl BJDs?

We make both resin and vinyl BJDs to give doll collectors a choice. The main differences are price, weight and durability. The resin has a greater “live forever” quality; it’s weighty and warm to the touch. The resin dolls are completely handmade, hand cast, sanded, painted, and strung. Our resin dolls are polyurethane, the fingers can break, and the dolls can chip if dropped. Resin is a much more expensive material.

Our vinyl dolls are easy to play with, less expensive, and molded by rotational molds. They are still hand painted and hand strung. This doll is great for travelling or beginner BJD collectors.

Is your company aware of the new safety laws?

We have strived to remove all toxins from the new ABC and OZ lines. These resin and vinyl BJD dolls are not toys. They are collectible dolls not meant for play. They are intended for 14 or older people. Young children should be supervised as there are small parts which can cause choking if swallowed.

Are there different sized dolls?

We make many sizes, and are working on measurements for the entire line. These will be posted on the page next to the dolls’ info and picture.

Where are your dolls made?

Our dolls are made with love in China. We have a great relationship with our factory and are very proud of their work. We looked at many different options and the best craftsmanship we could find is the factory we chose.

Do you design all your dolls?

I did not sculpt or engineer the first four girls. I did give specifications on their look. After the first four girls arrived, I began to make changes in the body, generation 2 came out, and then I sculpted my own which is the third generation. I now sculpt and engineer the whole line and have for the last year and half. I have wonderful finishing artists in China, and together in that year and half, we have completed nearly 50 different dolls and critters.

I design all the outfits by drawing them, and then a dedicated team in Hong Kong makes the samples. We accept no outside designs.

If I need a doll repaired, what do I do?

You can email us and if it something simple like the first generation bodies (sometimes the eye hook comes loose), we can give you simple instructions to repair it. If your dog ate a foot, most likely your doll will need a spa day!

Just a few tips, we use cheap balloons with the blowing section cut off for wig caps. They MUST be white or clear! Purchase at Party City, or a balloon store. Never leave dark clothes on a BJD, even washed, they can stain, as can dark wigs. Lined clothing is best. Stains can be removed. See Denver Dolls fact sheet…link above. Dolls should not be placed in direct sunlight. Little socks or plastic bags on fingers will make them easier to slide through sleeves. For hand, head, and foot removal, and replacement see separate page.
